Hit or stand calculator: every move by hand total

Choose a hand total and the dealer's up card. You get the chart's move and the average result of each possible move over all two-card hands with that total.

Hit−0.535−5.35
Stand−0.540−5.40
Double−1.070−10.70

Every move loses on average here; the chart picks the one that loses least.

Averages are over every two-card hand with this total against this up card, with the dealer having checked for blackjack where the rules say so. "Per bet" counts the extra bet on doubles and splits.

This calculator works by hand total, like the chart. For your exact cards – a three-card 16, or cards you can see at other seats – use the blackjack calculator.

Why some hands lose whatever you do

Hard 12 to 16 against a dealer 7 or higher are the worst hands in blackjack: standing loses to every dealer total from 17 up, and hitting busts often. The calculator shows that every move has a negative average, so the right play is the one that loses least, not one that wins.

When doubling is worth it

Double down when the extra bet adds more than it risks: on 10 or 11 against a weaker up card, and on some soft hands against a 5 or 6. The table shows the average for the whole doubled amount, measured in units of your first bet.

The hands players doubt most, against every dealer card: should you hit on 16, on 15, on 12, 13 or 14 and how to play soft 18.
